This has me feeling some type of way. #1, I’m glad that folks can take testing into their own hands without risking opening themselves up to violations of privacy and/or criminalization statutes across the U.S. #2 It’s convenient and you take your time…ie, do this in the privacy of your own safe space. #3 It’s nowhere near as expensive as testing at the doctors office w/o insurance.’
Then there is the false confidence that this type of test could give. Picture it. You’re on Grindr or Jack’d or A4A or BGC or w/e…and you invite a guy over for some nsa/fb/fwb fun. You (or he) pull out the OraQuick. Wait 20 minutes and get a negative result. Green light right? Not really…HIV can take 3-6 months to show via the most sophisticated tests. Everyone doesn’t know this and this could really complicate the effectiveness of this awesome tool. I hope that there is an effort to make this clear in present and future advertising campaigns.
